What is PVD plating? Stainless steel color plating technology developed in 2024

What is PVD plating? Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is a technological method used under vacuum conditions (from 10-2 to 10-4 Torr), where vapor is converted from a liquid state to a vapor state. This technology is considered the pinnacle of advancement in the field and has no impact on the environment.

What is PVD plating?

What is PVD plating?? PVD uses the principle of thermodynamics by focusing energy into a solid precursor material. This solid precursor material is excited through methods such as energy bombardment, use of lasers, or Arc evaporation. This energy breaks bonds in the crystal structure and ionizes atoms as they leave the precursor material. The ionized atoms are then released and transferred to the location where they need to be deposited, forming a thin layer on the product surface.

What is the PVD plating technology process?

PVD plating technology goes through four main stages including “evaporation, transportation, reaction and deposition” with a closed process and meeting quality standards.

Stage 1: Metal evaporation

This stage marks the transition of the metal from a solid to a vapor state. The metal atoms at the electrode pole separate due to the convergence of the source energy and move on the cathode surface, breaking the crystal bond, melting and evaporating. Metal atoms (such as Titan, Zr, Cr) interact with electrons and other ions in the plasma environment, becoming Ti+, Zr+, Cr+ and Ti++, Zr++, Cr++ ions.

Phase 2: Transportation

The transport process is when Ti+, Zr+, Cr+ and Ti++, Zr++, Cr++ ions move under the influence of the electric field to the product to be plated.

Phase 3: Reaction

Here, the electrode metal ions combine with gas ions and gas mixtures to create the color of the coating. These reactions create different compounds, creating a variety of colors during the PVD plating process.

Stage 4: Deposition

The final stage is the deposition of metal-gas compounds to create a coating on the product surface.

Due to the high hardness of metals and strong coating properties, PVD plating plays an important role in protecting important parts of machinery and equipment.

PVD coatings are created through evaporation of material from a solid source (Ti, TiAl, Cr) using various physical methods such as using electron beam or electric arc, electric pulse, ion bombardment, etc. The air in the treatment chamber is bonded to high pressure and controls the pressure of the gases (mainly nitrogen and argon).

Metals and gases react in the chamber to condense on the surface of the coated components. Common grades such as TiN, TiAlN, TiCN or CrN are commonly used in industrial applications. Before being put into the galvanizing furnace, the product must be cleaned, removed from stains and dried.
