Currently, stainless steel is a commonly used material in many fields such as construction, design, etc. Stainless steel is classified into many different types with special properties. Although stainless steel is widely used in everyday life, few people understand its composition. Stainless steel is formed from what elements? How many stages does the stainless steel production process include? All these questions will be answered by Hoa Giang Inox in the following article.

General introduction to stainless steel
Stainless steel, also known as stainless steel, is an iron alloy containing more than 10.5% chromium, along with components such as nickel, nitrogen, carbon, manganese, and molybdenum. It is also known by many other names such as white steel. On the market today, there are many different types of stainless steel, each offering unique characteristics and benefits.
Austenitic stainless steels such as sus 301, sus 304, sus 306, sus 310, contain at least 16% chromium, over 7% nickel and less than 0.08% carbon. They are flexible, non-magnetic, easy to bend and shape.
Ferritic stainless steels such as sus 409, sus 410, sus 430, have chromium content accounting for 12% to 17% of the total content. They retain the soft properties of steel while still being more resistant to corrosion.
Duplex stainless steel types such as IDX 201, SAF 253, SAF 205, SAF 204 are a combination of Austenitic and Ferritic, creating a material with special softness and ductility.
Stainless steel is used in many fields such as construction, petrochemical industry, aircraft manufacturing, medicine, and also in everyday life to produce all kinds of cooking utensils and household appliances.

Detailed stainless steel production process from the manufacturer
After understanding stainless steel, let’s learn about the stainless steel production process. Below is the detailed Stainless Steel Production Process including 5 steps.
Melting scrap
The first step in the stainless steel production process is to melt scrap, including raw stainless steel and other iron alloys. The scrap is heated in a 160-ton photoelectric furnace, then transferred to the converting unit. Here, alloying elements are added to form the exact chemical composition of stainless steel.
Next, the molten solution is cooled and solidified, then cut into panels weighing 30 tons, 12m long, 2m wide and 200mm thick. Then the sheet is surface treated and transferred to the hot rolling mill.

Hot rolled stainless steel
At the hot rolling factory, stainless steel plates with a thickness of 200mm will be processed down to 3mm in a 3-step process. First, the plate is heated at 1250 degrees Celsius to reduce the thickness from 200mm to 40mm.
Next, the 40mm thick stainless steel plate will go through 7 rolling platforms to reduce the thickness to about 3mm. Finally, these 3mm thick stainless steel sheets are rolled into rolls to be transported to the annealing and soaking factory.
Annealing and soaking stainless steel for the first time
Stainless steel coils are annealed in a furnace to restore the basic properties of stainless steel. Next, the black oxidized surface on the stainless steel roll is thoroughly treated by shot blasting. Finally, the stainless steel roll is soaked in acid, then cleaned with water and dried with air. At this time, the stainless steel coil has a bright white color and an almost perfect surface, ready to be shipped.

Cold rolled and stainless steel for the second time
To produce stainless steel plates with a thickness of less than 3mm, at least 0.3mm, stainless steel will be cold rolled many times in a specialized rolling machine. After cold rolling, annealing and annealing oxide removal are carried out to create 2D translucent stainless steel panels.
If stainless steel is annealed in a protective environment, the surface will have a BA gloss. No need to clean or remove annealed oxide, the stainless steel strip still ensures the necessary shine. Finally, in this stage, skinpass helps the stainless steel coil have a flat surface and meet the highest requirements.
Production of finished stainless steel
In the finishing step, stainless steel rolls will be processed and cut to the required shape and size, including stainless steel rolls, stainless steel sheets, stainless steel pipes, stainless steel boxes, etc. The surface can be treated to blur, mirror shine, color coating,… according to order requirements. In particular, processes such as bending and laser cutting can be performed to create finished products according to customers’ wishes.
