What purpose is 316 stainless steel used for?
Stainless steel 316 is an Austenitic stainless steel, containing molybdenum as standard. Molybdenum in the composition of stainless steel 316 helps it have better corrosion resistance, even superior to stainless steel 304. Stainless steel 316 has the ability to operate well in environments containing chloride. The application of 316 stainless steel allows for easy machining, thereby creating many parts for applications in many fields such as architecture, transportation and industry.
What purpose is 316 stainless steel used for?
Three popular types of stainless steel
Stainless steel 316L
316L stainless steel is a type of stainless steel with low carbon content (L from “Low” – low in English). 316L stainless steel is commonly used in technical details, especially the popular form with a thickness of over 6mm.
Stainless steel 316H
Stainless steel 316H is a type of stainless steel with a higher carbon content than stainless steel 316L (H from “High” – high in English). 316L stainless steel mainly overcomes the limitations of 316L, being able to operate in high temperature environments.
Stainless steel 316Ti
Stainless steel 316Ti is upgraded and improved compared to the previous two types of stainless steel, with the addition of Titanium to help stabilize mechanical properties in applications requiring high temperature and intensity.

Outstanding advantages of stainless steel 316
Corrosion resistance
The biggest advantage when using 316 stainless steel is its excellent corrosion resistance in air and highly corrosive solutions, superior to 304 stainless steel. Depending on the leak and the level of joint corrosion exposed to salt water environments (e.g. deep sea environments), corrosion resistance may decrease if temperatures exceed approximately 60°C. Seawater resistance may be up to approximately 1000 mg/L chloride at Ambient temperature, reduced to approximately 500 mg/L above 60°C.
316 stainless steel is often referred to as “marine stainless steel” but is not a suitable choice for warm seawater. In many marine environments, 316 Stainless Steel may inevitably experience surface corrosion, leading to brown staining. This is especially relevant for crack lines and rough surfaces.
Heat resistance
The intermittent heat resistance of 316 stainless steel is at 870 degrees Celsius, 925 degrees Celsius if operated continuously. However, 316 stainless steel should be kept operating between 425-860 degrees Celsius to ensure performance. Oxidation resistance, or scaling ability, depends on the internal Cr content, as shown in the graph below.
Most martensitic and ferritic steels are resistant to oxidation and have a consequent lower useful operating temperature. An exception is Ferritic steel grade 446, which has about 24% Cr, which can be used to resist oxidation at temperatures up to 1100°C.

Heat treatment
At appropriate temperatures, 316 stainless steel may require heat treatment before machining. Heat 316 stainless steel at about 1010 to 1120 degrees Celsius, then process and cool quickly. Note, 316 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
Welding ability
The weldability of 316 stainless steel is very good with all types of materials and welding methods. Heavy welds in heavy industry are often annealed after welding to effectively prevent corrosion.
Machining ability
The machining ability of Stainless Steel 316, compared to many other types of steel, is rated at a good level, not equal to Stainless Steel 304 but higher than Stainless Steel 310. For that reason, Stainless Steel 316 is often used in the processing of stainless steel. larger appliances, rather than small or household items.
Currently, manufacturers have developed a type of stainless steel from 316 stainless steel called 316 Ugima stainless steel grade. This type has higher machinability than regular 316 grade and still maintains the same quality.

Diverse applications of 316 stainless steel in life
Stainless steel 316 is a material widely used in many fields with diverse applications:
Food and Environment Industry Contains Chloride
Stainless steel 316 is used to produce equipment in the food industry and operates in environments containing many chlorides.
Medical and Experimental Industry
Application of stainless steel 316 in medical equipment, laboratory equipment in hospitals, operating rooms, and laboratories.
Joints in the Body
Used in joints in the body, such as pins and screws in hip and knee implants.
Marine industry
Manufacture of ship and ship accessories, anchors, and aircraft accessories.
Chemical Transportation and Storage Industry
Application of 316 stainless steel in the transportation industry and chemical tank production.
Mining Industry
Used in mineral exploitation, oil and gas, mining, quarrying and water filtration industries.
Construction of Nuclear Reprocessing Plant
Used in nuclear reprocessing plant construction.

How to Choose Good Quality 316 Stainless Steel
To choose good quality 316 stainless steel, you can apply a number of distinctions as follows:
Use Solution M2
Check using M2 solution and observe the red precipitate on the stainless steel surface.
Use Magnets
Use a magnet, because 316 stainless steel is not affected by magnetism, so it will not be attracted to the magnet.
Note that, to save time and effort, as well as ensure quality, you should choose to buy stainless steel at reputable and quality addresses.
